At first glance, rebuilding an 1,100-foot seawall might sound simple. But imagine placing a thin strip of wood on soft sand and splashing water against it—the sand quickly washes away, and the wood sags or breaks. Now scale that up to the power of river tides and storms, and you’ll understand the challenge OCC faced.

Rather than a full demolition and rebuild, OCC applied a proven technique that strengthened the structure while controlling cost, overflow, and storm impact. The team set back the revetment stones and created a temporary barrier to protect the site, then constructed an epoxy-coated steel cage around the existing wall. This design included a new reinforced foundation and added both height and width for greater durability.

Electrical and communication conduits were embedded within the new concrete, and the deep-rooted foundation extended another foot below grade. The result was a seawall that not only looked seamless but also provided superior storm protection and stability.
